Theatre Advisory |
Theatre Advisory is a year-long course that is open to freshmen only. Students will study the fundamental principles of acting: non-verbal communication, presentational skills, characterization, and partner scenework/relationships. In addition they will receive an overview of the technical aspects and other non-performance elements of the theatre. Participating in or attending a theatre production or experience (once per semester) reinforces concepts taught throughout the school year. Theatre Advisory requires no prior theatrical experience; however, it is encouraged. Completion of this full-year course satisfies the Freshman Advisory and Fine Arts requirement for graduation. There will be one public performance of a children's play at the end of the school year. Date TBD.

Drama 1:

Drama 1: Intro to Theatre is an introductory theatre class. Students will study the fundamental principles of acting: non-verbal communication, presentational skills, characterization, and partner scene work/relationships. In addition they will receive an overview of the technical aspects and other non-performance elements of the theatre. Participating in or attending a theatre production or experience (once per semester) reinforces concepts taught throughout the school year. Drama 1 requires no prior theatrical experience; however, it is encouraged. Completion of this course satisfies the Fine Arts requirement for graduation.

Drama 2:

Drama 2: Actor’s Studio is an intermediate acting class designed to help students utilize internal resources for the creation of textured, well-rounded characters. Students will develop confidence in their theatre techniques through the intersection of the self and the character. Students will perform monologues, scenes, and ensemble pieces as they examine the many facets of theatre. Our major focus during the second semester is theatre for social change, which will feature some complex texts and concepts. This class will culminate in a staged reading open to friends and family on Tuesday, May 13th.

Drama 3 & 4:

Drama 3-4 explores the relationship between text and character, emotion and vulnerability, lyric and monologue, stage blocking and musical movement, all while allowing students to explore who they are as actors. Students will have an opportunity to discover a variety of theatrical styles as well as research some of the artists and techniques that make theatre such a unique art form. Students will perform solo pieces, scenes, songs, and group numbers as they examine the many facets of theatre. Drama 3 & 4 is the most advanced acting course offered at DHS and will be treated as such. Students are actors first. This class will have two artistic opportunities with an invited audience: a 10-min play showcase (12/12/24) and a fully-produced show (4/29/25-5/3/25).

Technical Theatre 1 & 2 |
Technical Theatre 1 and 2 are full-year courses which expose students to all aspects of technical theatre. The course offers students the opportunity to develop skills in scenic construction and painting, stage lighting, sound production, props creation, and production planning. They also acquire the skills to operate modern theatrical lighting and sound equipment. All elements of the design process are explored, including script analysis, drafting, model building and design presentation. Production planning, design projects and creative problem-solving activities round out the curriculum. Students in Tech Theatre 2 have practical design opportunities for DHS dance performances and the spring play. Honors level credit is available for this course.
